In 1834 Charles Babbage, English scientist, draws up the first plans for a programmable digital computer.
In 1946 John von Neumann at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ., designs a computer that stores information and uses binary numbers.
In 1960 Transistors are used to replace valves in commercial computers by the Digital Equipment Corporation in the U.S.A.
In the early 1980's electronic printers could reach speeds of 450 lines a second and, at that rate, turn out a 225 page book in 1 minute.
