Facts of Life Best Sellers by DaHeap The top selling fiction writer of all time is Agatha Christie, creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Her 78 crime novels have sold an estimated 2 billion copies in 44 different languages.
The world's best-selling and most widely distributed book is the Bible, with an estimated 3.88 billion copies sold between 1815 and 1999.
Excluding non-copyright works, the all time best-selling book is The Guinnes Book of Records, first published by Guiness Superlatives in October 1955. Global sales in 37 languages had surpassed 85 million by July 1999.
Three novels have been credited with sales of over 30 million, all of them by American female authors. They are Gone With the Wind( 1936) by Margaret Mitchell, To Kill A Mockingbird ( 1960) by Harper Lee, and Valley Of The Dolls (1966) by Jacqueline Susann, which sold 6.8 million copies in the six months following its publication.
Scottish author Alistair Maclean wrote a total of 30 novels, 28 of which have sold more than 1 million copies in the United Kingdom alone. It has been estimated that a novel by Maclean is purchased somewhere in the world every 18 seconds. |
