Perfect Hair in 2008
Setting the record straight in 2008 by guest columnist and salon owner, Richard B.

Want that perfectly straight mane of hair for the new year? Most people, not all for the record, can achieve this. Here's a hair strategy that might work for Y-O-U!

First, let's look at the basics. Shampoo and conditioner are the foundations of healthy hair and a great style.

If your hair is normal and not color treated, I'd recommend Redken's Smooth Down shampoo and conditioner to achieve that great sleek look. If your hair is color treated, permed or straightened, or dry in overall condition, I'd recommend Redken's Clear Moisture shampoo and conditioner.

So you're out of the shower and ready to style. Now what? First, because you'll be blowing your hair out straight with a dryer and possibly using a straightening iron, you'll want to minimize damage. Why not try Redken's Anti-Snap? This leave in treatment is pricey but well worth it when you consider the protection it offers your hair during the rest of the styling process. It really keeps breakage down.

Okay, one last thing before you pick up that blow dryer and paddle brush, also try Redken's 05 Straightening Balm. Don't use too much or your hair will be a gelatinous mess. Using sparingly all over your hair for great results.

Now you're ready to blow your hair dry. Make sure to use a good dryer on a lower setting if possible. Keep it a minimum of 8-12 inches away from your hair please. Otherwise all the preventative measures we've taken at this point are worthless.

All dry? Now the real fun starts. For stubborn curls or waves, you'll definitely want to consider investing in a good straightening iron for that perfectly straight look. I personally prefer the Farouk CHI GF1538 Turbo Regular 1 Inch Ceramic Flat Iron for great results. It has a broad range of temperature settings, experiment to find one that's just right for your hair. It also delivers great shine along with it's superior straightening.

Once your hair is straightened to your satisfaction, you're ready for the finishing touches. First, I recommend Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum for wonderful shine. Use very little or you'll look like you poured vegetable oil on your hair. You want to think sleek not salad. <g>. Finish up with Tigi's Bedhead Mastermind to piece out the ends. Again, take it easy with this product. Once you've tried it, you'll absolutely love the results.

As I said from the outset, not everyone can have straight hair. Many can but many have stubborn curls that can still be styled into an attractive, trendy do. See a professional stylist for best results and recommendations.

Also remember that beautiful hair also comes from within. Water intake is as important for your hair as it is the rest of you and proper hydration minimizes the dryness of your hair. Proper nutrition will also keep your hair healthy and happy.
