Facts of Life

by DaHeap
Talk, talk

Fact: Talk is the life blood of politics - or, as the American politician Adlai Stevenson put it: " A politician is a statesman who approaches every question with an open mouth." In fact, some of the wittiest epigrams come from politicians. Adlai Stevenson himself came up with: "Man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them. " A biblical turn of phrase was also favored by Jeremy Thorpe, the leader of the British Liberal Party, when he summed up British prime minister Harold Macmillan's dismissal of several close colleagues in a 1962 Cabinet reshuffle: "Greater love hath no man than this, than to lay down his friends for his life."
